This project was inspired by yarn bombing stitched portrait artist Victoria Villasana and our own diversity role models.
As our school is in such a remote location spread over 4 islands some of our classes have mixed age groups this project was run with every class across the school in every year from EYFS to year 6 all having a go at the same activity.
We began the project by doing some research in some of our favourite books ever, 'The People Awards' and 'Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls' and chose our diversity role model who dared to be different! We created research pages in our sketchbooks where we reflected upon the colour and unique style of the appearance and personality of our chosen role model. The following sketchbook examples are from a range of ages from years 1-6.
After we had chosen our role models we began our artist research on Victoria Villasana and began planning our final pieces. We loved exploring her stitch techniques, colour choices and use of line.
Finally after practising with line, colour, composition and our stitch technique in our sketchbooks we were ready to start creating our final pieces!
For KS1 & EYFS we differentiated this a part of the activity very slightly and although lots of us had a go a stitching we mostly used PVA glue to attach our yarns.
Our Final Pieces!
These portraits are so exciting! I love the rich diversity of choices from all the children, and can't wait to see them all displayed together in school. What a brilliant project!
