Mayan Modroc Masks (Year 2 - 6)

fiveislandsacademy

This project was inspired by our history lessons exploring mayan art & culture as well as looking at bold contemporary mask artist Archana Rajguru!

As our school is in such a remote location spread over 4 islands some of our classes have mixed age groups this project was run with every class across the school from year 2 to year 6 all having a go at the same activity.

We began the project by doing some research about Mayan event and death masks and had a virtual tour of the Mexican culture room at the British Museum. We discovered the mask designs were all inspired by the native jungle animals of Mexico & Guatemala and so we began by planning our own designs on paper which combined the jungle animal features of the mayans and bold facial features and colours of Archana's work.

Once we were happy with our designs we got plastering! This was are very first go at modroc and it was quite the challenge but we were all so chuffed with our final masks!
