Charcoal portrait project inspired by our text in english 'King Kong' by Anthony Browne.

As our school is in such a remote location spread over 4 islands some of our classes have mixed age groups this project was run with a class with children ranging from year 2 to year 6 all having a go at the same activity.

With such a range in ages our experience using charcoal varied hugely so to begin we explored the types of mark we could make with our charcoal. We loved trying out different parts of the charcoal sticks from the pointy end to scraping it along on its side.

When we felt confident we had explored the marks we'd like to use we had a go in our sketchbooks at a finishing the picture exercise from a black and white image.

Finally we were ready to scale up our drawings and began our enormous A2 charcoal portraits of Kong. We really tried to give our portraits character and expression to reflect Kong's complex character we had learned about in our text.
