We began this project with a super speedy drawing exercise creating 40 second drawings in our sketchbooks. We practiced holding the pencil slightly differently to how we would usually to practise holding our hands away from the paper (so that we when used the block printing inks we wouldn't smudge our work).
We rolled out our block printing inks using the acetate method of mono-printing to create our initial prints. At first our prints were very hit and miss we had to experiment with amounts of ink, printing pressure and thickness of line. We loved experimenting with a whole range on unconventional drawing tools from wooden pegs and clay tools to lolly pop sticks and kitchen knives.
These were some of our first monoprints, now we were ready to start experimenting with machine and hand stitching! We had 1:1 sessions for doing our free-motion embroidery stitching on the sewing machines. It was soooo tricky we had to think of it as doing continuous line drawings moving the paper instead of the pencil!
